Diatomite Mines, Ice Cold Water and Stupid Ideas
05 February 2018

A plan to head to the Old Man of Storr soon turned into a mountaineering expedition.

Alex, Rhea and I explored the old Diatomite mines near Staffin.

I thought it would be a great idea to throw Rhea's ball - which proceeded to bounce out of her reach and land straight in the river.  We watched helplessly as it bobbed along - and then started to run.

Slipping and sliding over the rocks, I launched myself into the river and caught the ball just before it made it to the sea.

I then came up with one of the worst ideas I have ever had - crossing the river to explore the ruined buildings on the other side.  Neither of us were prepared for the shock of icy cold water, numbing our feet and making us scream.  The view of Lealt Waterfall was, however, absolutely spectacular - as it needed to be to compensate for the terrible experience we had just had!

The day ended with a delicious meal at the Portree Hotel.

Above is Rhea against the backdrop of the Storr.
