Ric Herrington
Note From Norma Johnny Cash In Minginish
18 March 2012

The Minginish Community Hall was vibrating to the hum of Johnny Cash on Saturday, 17th March. Mr Ric Herrington was performing his “Cash Back“ Tribute to Johnny Cash (and later, also to Neil Diamond.)

I had the opportunity to photograph throughout the concert which, including breaks, lasted over 3 hours. During that time, Mr Herrington’s deep, rich, dark American accent reverberated throughout the hall and Johnny Cash came to life again on the stage. As well as sounding like Johnny, Mr Herrington even has a look of him, especially around the eyes. He and his wife, Marion, had travelled up from the south of Scotland to entertain our community. Considering that he has played for Gwyneth Paltrow and with Coldplay, the honour was all ours!

Tables and chairs were arranged around the hall - cabaret-style - with nibbles on all tables and an American-feel in hall décor and stage. A large screen on the left of the stage showed video-footage and slides of Johnny Cash throughout the performance. And what a performance! Ric Herrington’s powerful voice, his guitar playing and non-stop enthusiasm was infectious. Hundreds of feet were tapping spontaneously and I found myself wishing I knew more of the songs to join in. (An older gentleman at our table knew just about every word of every song!) Ric kept the songs coming with only two short breaks. Although a songwriter in his own right, Mr Herrington’s deep respect for Johnny Cash was clearly evident.

Two segments of the evening were devoted to Johnny Cash and the third to Neil Diamond. At various points in the programme, Ric Herrington came down among the audience, walking around the tables, singing and even dancing with members of the audience. No one could fail to be impressed by the professionalism, dedication and sheer hard work of Mr Herrington that evening. (When I asked him afterwards if he were exhausted, he said that he was O.K. as long as he kept his jacket on. If that came off, he fell on the floor!!)

Ric Herington has performed over 500 Johnny Cash tribute concerts. When he reached the 500-mark, Johnny’s daughter wrote to congratulate him and wish him well in the next 500. With the Minginish concert under his belt, he’s well on the way.
